lately i’ve been getting into instagram more and more! i’ve been doing research as well as just plenty and plenty of trial and error on my account to really see what gets a good response and the biggest priority, i enjoy creating. i know a lot of people will give crap for caring about instagram like this but for me it is an extension of my blog and another place for me to create different types of content.
username and bio– the first thing i wanted to talk about was you username, name card and bio. i personally prefer for me and others when the username includes thier name because then i associate you with your account. i personally would say to use either your name and somethng cute or simply your name. for example my username is carlyallisonxo and my blog is lovecarlyallison.
as for the bio i definetely say you need to have it share as much about you as you can in a short and cute way. i recomend inclduing your age, the country, state or big city you live in, what your page is about and of course the link to your blog if you have one. all of these things help you form an imediate connection to your followers which is really cool in my opinion. i also love a tasteful level of cute emojis cause why not. oh and if you have a blog link i seriously recoomend having a ‘call to action’ above it. for example my main blog topic is simply lifestyke so i have ‘welcome to my life’ and an arrow pointing to the link and down to my feed and highlights.
daily stories– the second biggest part of your account in my opinion is your daily stories and highlights. my personal favorite 2 ways people use stories are as a daily diary kind of vibe or a specific thing that current favorites or hauls. i usually stick with the first because the more specific things usually end up on the blog or podcast instead. basically for the daily diary you just take a bunch of photos throughout the day and you can post as you go or recap at the end of the day. then you just add cute font and extra things like location, gifs, time and whatever you think fits with the story. i love these cause i think it really helps you get to know the person better. as for the more specific things you can do things like current favorites, a haul, netflix recommendations, a playlist, etc. anything like that and just make the stories aesthetic and this is perfect for a day where you don’t have much to post!
igtv and videos– the next big section of instagram is the newish thing they launched last year, igtv! and also just free videos as well. i personally am a big fan of igtv and i think it’s nice every now and then to put together a video for that! you can make travel montages, youtube style vids, makeup videos and so so much more. same thing with your feed vids, i think instagram videos are a great way to have more to offer from your account and reach more people. as for editing them, my favorite simple editing app for your phone is called ‘unfold’ and it’s what i’ve used for all mine!
taking photos– the best opportunities to take photos is of course when you are traveling or just in a new place. almost my whole feed was either when i was traveling or with friends in somewhere cute, often times somewhere fancy in seattle! if i’m traveling i always carry my camera which is the canon t6 and it takes incredible photos and when i have it usually my sister takes my travel photos. then when i’m out with my friends the photos are taken with either my iphone 6s or it one of my friends has a nicer phone we’ll use theirs and just airdrop it to me! i recommend just looking around your surroundings and see what kind of ideas you get and also going through others posts (don’t copy though!) and pinterest.
editing routine– next up after you have taken great photos is editing them. my personal favorite and go-to is lightroom cc! many content creators make their own presets but i personally bought some. i have the sarah mills original pack but i don’t know if it’s still for sale. if you want to buy some i recommend going though a bunch of instagramers who’s editing style you like and seeing if they sell their presets cause there’s a high chance they use them. then if i needed to blur something out cause i’m not trying to get stalked i use the blur tool on facetune. i also sometimes use the app afterlight to add the dust effect cause it’s super cute!
captions and hashtags– now that your photo is all ready to go it’s time to make a caption and then add your hashtags! as for captions i’m a fan of shorter ones, mine are typically really short cause i don’t feel like i have much to say usually cause that goes on the blog and stories. basically just make sure it’s cute and definitely use cute emojis! as for hashtags some people say that you have to put them in the caption others say to put them in comments. personally i have done both and i don’t notice a difference in discovery and engagement. i would say put them in the comments and keep your captions clean and simple cause nobody likes a messy one!
my speed round tips:
- be active on others accounts to increase your engagement
- reach out to other bloggers and similar accounts through dm and story replies
- less is more and quality > quantity
- the app unfold can really improve your instagram stories
- i get my highlight covers from pinterest and they are just cool patterns and shit
i hope you enjoyed this post and that all of this helps you out maybe!
